Amaravati becomes sole capital of Andhra Pradesh as President Murmu clears amendment bill
Law amending The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code also gets Presidential assent
President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday gave her assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, which recognises the greenfield city of Amaravati as the capital.
The Act was subsequently published in the Gazette of India following the Presidential assent.
She also gave her assent to The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Act, 2026, which has been published in the Official Gazette.
The amendment introduces significant changes to India’s insolvency framework, including stricter limits on the withdrawal of proceedings.
A central feature of the amendment is the revision of Section 12A (withdrawal of insolvency proceedings), which now restricts withdrawal of corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) proceedings at key stages. Under the amended provision, withdrawal will not be permitted before the constitution of the Committee of Creditors (CoC) or after the issuance of the first invitation for submission of resolution plans.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu thanked the President for granting assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026.
Naidu also thanked the Union Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to the southern state and his guidance to all the Members of Parliament for supporting the ‘Amaravati Bill’.
“This is a victory for my people of Andhra Pradesh, especially my farmers of Amaravati,” he said in a post on X.
