Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused the RSS-BJP of working against the core principles of the Constitution, saying their approach does not align with the idea of equality for all citizens. He was speaking at the launch of the ‘Run for Ambedkar, Run for Constitution’ marathon in Delhi ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti, which is observed on April 14.

Addressing participants at Mandi House in the national capital, Gandhi referred to Ambedkar and his role in shaping the Constitution, and said the document forms the foundation of India’s identity. “Any effort that weakens this framework affects the country’s basic structure,” he said.

Rahul said while public gestures of respect were visible, the underlying approach of the ruling establishment, according to him, was different and did not support equal rights in practice. “The Congress aims to protect and strengthen constitutional values,” he said.

He said the the marathon was meant to take the message of constitutional rights and their protection to people across the country. He also took part in the event, dressed in a blue T-shirt, alongside party workers and supporters.

Later, in a social media post, Rahul described the event as a reflection of the party’s commitment to Ambedkar’s ideals and the Constitution. He said there was a need for a collective response to injustice and discrimination, drawing from Ambedkar’s vision.

Former India captain and Telangana Minister Mohammad Azharuddin was also present on the occasion and supported the initiative. “Such campaigns should be taken across the country and continued over time,” he said, underlining the need for unity and collective effort for progress.

A day earlier, the Congress’ SC and OBC departments held an event in Lucknow to mark the birth anniversary of social reformer Jyotiba Phule.
