Brood Multiplication Centre to boost production, says Fisheries Secretary

He also said that this initiative will help reduce dependence on imported broodstock, ensure improved biosecurity and enhance productivity and sustainability in shrimp farming.

He was speaking after visiting the ICAR-CMFRI Marine Fish Broodstock and Hatchery at Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to review the initiatives related to the development of quality broodstock and the production of high-quality seed for the aquaculture sector.

During the visit, Likhi interacted with scientists, technical experts, farmers and staff members and gained insights into ongoing research, broodstock development initiatives and operational activities supporting the growth of India’s shrimp aquaculture sector.

During the interaction, the challenges such as weak market linkages, high input and electricity cost and need for training and capacity-building were also identified. The Secretary directed officials from the Department of Fisheries to coordinate with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) and the state government to organize training and capacity-building programs.

"The established Brood Multiplication Centre (BMC) is expected to significantly strengthen India’s shrimp aquaculture sector by enabling the production and supply of high-quality, Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Penaeus monodon (black tiger shrimp) broodstock. This initiative will help reduce dependence on imported broodstock, ensure improved biosecurity, and enhance productivity and sustainability in shrimp farming," Likhi said.

India’s marine product exports have reached a record level of Rs 73,890.46 crore during 2025–26, with export volumes of 19.72 lakh metric tonnes, reflecting the steady growth and expanding global demand for Indian seafood.

Andhra Pradesh is the largest domestic fish producer and seafood exporter, accounting for a significant share of the country’s aquaculture production, with 55.39 lakh tonnes in 2025–26. With its extensive coastline, well-developed aquaculture infrastructure and strong presence of processing and export units, the state has emerged as a major hub for marine and aquaculture exports.
