Canopy walk to glass bridge: Plans afoot to put Bastar on world tourism map

The plan covers a wide range of initiatives to boost tourism activity in the areas, where the writ of naxal leaders like the now slain Madvi Hidma once ran. “In the tourism sector, significant strides are being made to position Bastar on the global map,” the CM said.

Key destinations such as Chitrakote and Tirathgarh Waterfalls in Bastar, along with Kanger Valley National Park, are being developed with enhanced infrastructure and visitor facilities.

“Adventure tourism projects, including a canopy walk and a glass bridge, are also underway to attract a wider range of tourists. Cultural and sporting events like the ‘Bastar Olympics’ and ‘Bastar Pandum’ are playing a vital role in reshaping the region’s identity and showcasing its rich heritage,” Sai said.

He added that skill development efforts had gained momentum, with over 1,00,000 youths trained so far, of whom nearly 40,000 already employed.

Plans for canopy walk and glass bridge, officials say, can transform Bastar. Hunt is on for a suitable site for the glass bridge and a detailed project report will be finalised soon.

Meanwhile, canopy walks have come up in many of Bastar villages. These elevated pedestrian walkways, often a series of suspended bridges and platforms, built high within the tree branches (canopy) of a forest, are helping the entire state promote ecotourism.

Bastar’s Dhudmaras village was recently selected for the UN World Tourism Organisation’s ‘Best Tourism Village Upgrade Programme’. The move positions this village as a rising global eco-tourism hub, highlighting its potential for sustainable tourism.

The plan on Bastar rejuvenation in particular has been presented to PM Modi today. Sai also invited the PM to Bastar for the monsoons.
