Amid the high-voltage Delhi Assembly elections, tempers ran high on Saturday when AAP alleged that its supremo Arvind Kejriwal’s convoy was attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers during campaigning in the New Delhi consitutency.

However, the BJP termed the entire episode as Kejriwal’s ‘drama’ and claimed that the AAP leader’s vehicle hit two persons following which they were hospitalised.

981 candidates in fray

  • A total of 981 candidates are in the fray for elections to 70 seats of the Delhi Assembly, scheduled to be held on February 5, according to the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi.
  • The high-profile New Delhi seat saw a maximum of 40 nominations by 29 candidates which includes AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal who has been pitted against BJP’s Parvesh Verma and Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit.

Dramatic scenes unfolded when the vehicle of AAP convener was passing through the New Delhi constituency and was abruptly stopped by the BJP workers who waived black flags. In a video shared by the AAP, a stone could be seen landing on Kejriwal’s vehicle. The AAP further alleged that the alleged attack was done on the behest of BJP’s New Delhi candidate Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma.

Responding to the AAP’s allegations, Verma stated three unemployed youth who wanted to meet Kejriwal were beaten up by the Punjab Police personnel on Kejriwal’s directions.

“At around 4 pm, near the Lal Bahadur Sadan at Gole Market, Arvind Kejriwal was conducting a door-to-door campaign. During the campaigning, three youths — Vishal, Abhishek and Rohit — tried to meet Arvind Kejriwal. They are unemployed and they tried to ask Arvind Kejriwal about jobs. When they did this, the police personnel —who have come from Punjab — beat them. The three said Kejriwal asked the driver to drive the vehicle over them,” Verma told reporters.

Later, Verma even went to the hospital to meet injured BJP workers.

The AAP also accused the Election Commission for turning a blind eye over the incident. Party’s chief spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar. “The Election Commission seems to have turned a blind eye to these acts, failing to notice the illegal activities of Parvesh Verma. I hope the Election Commission and Delhi Police will open their eyes to this reality,” Kakkar said.

Meanwhile, senior police officers told The Tribune that they are investigating the matter and analysing the videos recorded by the onlookers as well as any CCTV footage present in the vicinity of the incident spot.
