DRDO unveils 2 key armoured platforms

Integrated with high-power engine and automatic transmission, these platforms possess a high power-to-weight ratio, higher speed, gradient and obstacle negotiating capability

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) today unveiled new armoured platforms that are designed for anti-tank capability with faster mobility across terrains.

The Advanced Armoured Platforms come in two versions: one that moves on wheels and the other on tank-like tracks. The latter has been designed for deserts and uneven mountain roads. The wheeled version can operate in high mountains and plains.

The vehicles have been designed and developed by Vehicles Research & Development Establishment of the DRDO and were unveiled DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat at Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra.

“The platforms have been developed to meet the emerging operational requirements of the defence forces,” the Ministry of Defence said.

Both the platforms have been integrated with indigenously designed and developed, with advanced features to meet the mobility, fire power and protection requirements. Integrated with high-power engine and automatic transmission, these platforms possess a high power-to-weight ratio, higher speed, gradient and obstacle negotiating capability.

Designed to cross water bodies, the platforms can resist modular blasts and have protection all around.

The platforms have 30-mm weapons on its turret along with a 7.62-mm gun to launch anti-tank guided missiles. The base design has the capabilities to be configured for multiple roles. The indigenous content is to the tune of 65 per cent with plans to increase it to 90 per cent.

These have been manufactured by two industry partners — TATA Advanced Systems Limited and Bharat Forge Limited.
