Days after the Congress claimed that the wife of Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma holds passports of three countries, the Government of India on Tuesday denied the charges.

While addressing a press conference in Assam, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita said India, through official and embassy channels, had subjected the claims of Congress to verification and found these to be false.

"After thorough verification through official channels with the stated countries, we have established that these passports are fake, fabricated and void. The documents are not correct and should not be deemed as correct," Margherita said.

He said the claims were meant to mislead the people of Assam, who will answer the Congress at the hustings.

Congress media head chairman Pawan Khera had recently claimed that Rinki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, held passports of the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda.
