Government imposes ban on Hizb-ut-Tahrir

The Centre on Thursday declared Hizb-Ut-Tahrir (HuT) a terrorist organisation, announcing the decision through a gazette notification. In parallel, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) searched the house of a key arrested accused in connection with the Tamil Nadu Hizb-Ut-Tahrir anti-India conspiracy case.

Home Minister Amit Shah, announcing the decision, stated on X, “The MHA today declared ‘Hizb-Ut-Tahrir’ as a ‘Terrorist Organisation’. The outfit is involved in various acts of terror, including radicalising gullible youths to join terrorist organisations and raise funds for terror activities, posing a serious threat to national security and the sovereignty of India (sic).”

The gazette notification detailed that Hizb-Ut-Tahrir is committed to establishing a global Islamic State and Caliphate, including in India, by overthrowing democratically elected governments through jihad and terrorism. The HuT’s activities, including radicalisation and raising funds for terror activities, threaten the democratic framework and internal security of the country.

The organisation has been actively involved in recruiting youths to join terrorist groups like ISIS and promoting terrorism through social media platforms, secure messaging apps, and Dawah meetings.
