In a rerun of the 2021 Assembly poll, the BJP on Monday set up a Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee fight by fielding the Bengal Leader of Opposition from Bhabanipur, a segment represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In 2021, Adhikari, a former confidante of Mamata, had defeated her by 1,956 votes in Nandigram forcing her to looking for a new seat. This time, he has again decided to follow her to Bhabanipur while he also contests from his own Nandigram seat.
Importantly, in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision exercise, Bhabanipur saw 44,787 voter deletions out of 2.06 lakh voters.
Meanwhile, Nandigram remains important in Bengal politics. This was the seat that propelled Mamata to power against the Left Front in 2011 after she led the anti-land acquisition movement here.
In the first list, the BJP has again fielded 41 of its 77 MLAs. Former state unit chief Dilip Ghosh will contest from Kharagpur Sadar.
Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta has been nominated from Rashbehari seat in South Kolkata. As the government marks the 75th anniversary of national song “Vande Matram” penned by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, the BJP has fielded Soumitra Chattopadhyay from Naihati in Bengal. He hails from Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s family.
