India, Japan discuss cooperation in defence technologies

India and Japan on Monday discussed cooperation in defence equipment and maritime technologies during the 8th India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue held in Tokyo. The meeting was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Japanese Vice-Minister of Defence for International Affairs Kano Koji.
The two delegations discussed expanding cooperation in defence manufacturing, technological innovation, cybersecurity, space and maritime technologies, the Ministry of Defence said.
Koji reaffirmed Japan's commitment to further strengthening defence ties with India across priority areas, the ministry added.
The dialogue came just 10 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during talks with Japanese counterpart Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi, pitched joint design, production and manufacturing of defence equipment. India is keen to leverage Japan’s gradual easing of restrictions on defence exports and military technology transfers.

The two countries also reiterated their commitment to promoting a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific region. Both sides reviewed progress in bilateral defence cooperation since the previous Defence Policy Dialogue and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The discussions covered the entire spectrum of defence engagement, including military-to-military exchanges, cooperation between joint headquarters, maritime cooperation and defence exercises.
Rajesh Kumar appreciated Japan’s continued engagement with India in the defence sector and underscored the importance of enhancing practical cooperation under the framework of the Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
Earlier in the day, Kumar called on Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. He also laid a wreath at the Self-Defence Forces Memorial Stone in Tokyo, paying tribute to members of the Japan Self-Defence Forces who made the supreme sacrifice in service of their nation.
