India records peak power demand of 257 GW on May 18
Union Ministry of Power says there was no shortfall, and the record high consumption across India was addressed smoothly
India recorded a peak power demand of 257.37 GW at 3.42 pm on Monday and met it successfully.
The Union Ministry of Power on Tuesday reported a new high and said there was no shortfall, and the record high consumption was addressed smoothly.
“Yesterday at 15:42 hours, the peak power demand of 257.37 GW was met without any shortfall. This peak demand was a new high, surpassing the previous peak demand of 256.1 GW, which was successfully met on April 25, 2026,” sources told The Tribune.
They said on Monday, 247.21GW of non-solar demand was also met at 22:29 hours.
“This too was a new high for the demand met for non-solar hours. The power availability in the country is sufficient and robust mechanisms are in place to meet the summer demand,” the ministry assured, adding that the energy challenge on account of the West Asia war was being addressed adequately and with preparation.
