IndiGo Kolkata-Chennai flight makes priority landing after left engine goes inoperative
Flight 6E-723 reported the problem and the airport authorities declared a 'Full Emergency'; all 224 passengers disembarked the plane later
An IndiGo flight from Kolkata to Chennai carrying 224 people made a priority landing at the Chennai airport late Tuesday night after its left engine became inoperative shortly before landing, prompting authorities to declare a “Full Emergency.”
Flight 6E-723, operating from Kolkata to Chennai, was scheduled to arrive at 11.30 pm, however, reported the technical problem and was then expected to land at 11.37 pm. Chennai airport authorities declared a Full Emergency at 11.29 pm, triggering emergency response arrangements to facilitate the aircraft’s safe arrival.
The aircraft landed safely on Runway 25 at 11.37 pm, with all 224 people on board safe. The Full Emergency was withdrawn at 11.47 pm, with airport operations subsequently returning to normal.
An IndiGo spokesperson said the aircraft had experienced a technical snag shortly before landing and, following standard operating procedures, all relevant authorities were immediately informed.
The pilots subsequently made a priority landing at the Chennai International Airport, the airline said, adding that all passengers and crew members safely disembarked.
“The aircraft is currently undergoing necessary checks and maintenance and will resume operations after relevant clearances,” the airline said.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of airline safety and operational preparedness following a series of recent aviation incidents. The latest occurrence, however, ended without any reported injuries or casualties.
Chennai airport authorities said the emergency response arrangements were activated as a precaution to ensure the aircraft could be received safely after the crew reported the left-engine problem.
The aircraft will remain under maintenance checks before being cleared for further operations.
