Meghalaya takes big leap in digital infrastructure, inks deal with Starlink
Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma announces on X
In a significant step toward enhancing digital infrastructure in Meghalaya, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Starlink India to introduce advanced satellite-based internet connectivity across the state.
Announcing this on X, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the agreement aimed to address long-standing challenges in connecting remote and hard-to-reach areas of Meghalaya, particularly schools, healthcare centres and rural communities.
Highlighting the progress made over the past eight years, the Chief Minister noted that governance reforms and digital initiatives have significantly reduced administrative processing times — from 30 days to just 3 days.
“Despite these advancements, ensuring reliable connectivity in our most remote regions remains a challenge. This partnership marks a crucial step toward bridging that gap,” Sangma said.
The introduction of satellite connectivity is expected to have far-reaching benefits. It will enhance access to quality healthcare by enabling telemedicine services, improve educational opportunities for students through better internet access and support farmers and rural communities by connecting them to digital resources and markets.
The collaboration also aligns with the state government’s broader vision of transforming Shillong into a leading IT and technology hub in Northeast India. By strengthening the digital ecosystem, the initiative seeks to create new opportunities for local youth and foster innovation-driven growth.
Senior representatives from SpaceX were present in New Delhi for the signing ceremony.
The Meghalaya government expressed optimism that the partnership would play a transformative role in extending the benefits of technology to the state’s remotest corners, ultimately improving quality of life and driving inclusive development.
