Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar will enter politics and a decision will be formally announced by the JD(U) shortly, said Bihar Minister Sharwan Kumar.Speaking to the media, Sharwan said, “Now, it’s clear, and it has been finalised that Nishant will join active politics. The party will make a formal announcement in a day or two. Party workers have been demanding Nishant’s entry into politics for several years. Now party workers and supporters are upbeat with the decision ahead of Holi.”

Even before the Bihar Assembly elections, senior leaders within the JD(U) had said that Nitish’s political legacy could be saved by bringing in his son Nishant. They had raised concerns that the allies could gobble the CM’s legacy.

In December 2025, JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha said that members and supporters wanted Nishant to work for the party.

It is learnt that a Rajya Sabha seat is also being considered for Nishant. When asked if Nitish’s son could be sent to the Upper House, Sharwan responded, “Anything can happen.”

Bihar Minister Ashok Choudhary also reiterated that Nishant should enter active politics. “Nishant mirrors Nitish’s body language; and the move is driven by party workers and not Nitish. Party workers have been demanding this for a long time. So, this will be a wonderful Holi gift,” he said.

Nishant was born in 1975 and is the only child of Nitish and Manju Sinha, who passed away in 2007. In 2017, Nishant had said, “I don’t have an interest in politics nor any knowledge about this field. My first love is spiritualism.”
