'Not rebels but traitors': Kirti Azad seeks disqualification of breakaway TMC MPs
Urges Speaker Om Birla to cancel membership of 20 MPs who joined NCPI after West Bengal Assembly poll defeat
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Wednesday termed members of its breakaway faction “traitors” and demanded their immediate disqualification from Parliament.
Accusing the MPs of openly defecting from the party, TMC leader Kirti Azad told reporters that they should not be treated as rebels but as “traitors”. He urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to cancel their membership without delay.
“These individuals are traitors, not rebels. Their membership should be cancelled immediately, as they are openly defecting. The Speaker has not yet designated them as a separate group, nor have they received official recognition. Therefore, the membership of these TMC traitors must be cancelled immediately,” Azad said.
As many as 20 TMC MPs revolted after the Mamata Banerjee-led party suffered a massive defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections held in May. The rebel faction, led by Kakoli Ghosh, joined the lesser-known Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
The breakaway faction had also written to the Speaker seeking separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha. Birla is yet to grant official recognition to the NCPI.
The faction has also participated in the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting as well as the 'Mangal Milan' meetings.
