Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday criticised the arrest of Independent Bihar MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, alleging that the action was politically motivated and intended to silence voices demanding accountability in the death of a female NEET aspirant in Patna. The Patna police arrested the Purnea MP from his residence late on Friday in connection with a land dispute case registered in 1995. Soon after the arrest, Gandhi said the move reflected the misuse of state power and was aimed at weakening demands for a fair investigation into the student’s death, which he described as “mysterious”.

In a social media post, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said the sequence of events following the NEET aspirant’s death had exposed “deep institutional failures”. He alleged that attempts were being made to derail the probe, and the victim’s family was facing harassment instead of receiving support.

“Pappu Yadav has been actively raising this issue and seeking justice for the victim. His arrest should be viewed in this context,” said Gandhi, alleging that the action was intended to intimidate those questioning the handling of the case and discourage public representatives from speaking out.

He further said that repeated incidents of violence against young girls in the state continued to raise concerns about their safety. Ensuring dignity, security and a credible investigative process was essential to restore public confidence, he added.

The Congress leader also accused the NDA government in Bihar of attempting to shield those responsible in the case and using administrative measures to suppress dissenting voices.
