A parliamentary panel report on India’s food safety has urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take strict action against misleading advertisements and food labels. It also called for establishing a food business database and conducting adequate national surveillance, rather than relying on state surveys.

The report focused on enhancing food safety through improved regulation of plastic packaging, mandating high-fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) warning labels, and strengthening FSSAI enforcement. It also emphasised on the need for reducing contamination risks in processed foods and increasing laboratory infrastructure.

“The FSSAI should coordinate with the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals to set stricter standards, highlighting the need to study the impact of microplastics on human health,” it said.

The panel also stressed the need for modernising laboratories and testing centres to ensure global quality standards for food items.

Earlier on March 13, the FSSAI had informed the Supreme Court that it was finalising pictorial or tabular warnings for the HFSS foods to help consumers make informed choices.

Due to their link to obesity and chronic diseases, many regions are restricting the marketing and placement of the HFSS foods, including sugary drinks, snacks, cakes and fast foods.

“The recommendations reflect a stronger regulatory push to address contamination and promote healthier consumer choices in India’s food sector,” the report added.
