Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of Bhutan, in Thimphu and conveyed warm felicitations on the occasion of the monarch’s 70th birth anniversary.

Modi extended best wishes and prayers on behalf of the Government and people of India for the continued good health and well-being of the Fourth King, officials said.

He also thanked His Majesty for his leadership, counsel, and guidance in strengthening the unique and time-tested friendship between India and Bhutan.

According to PMO officials, both leaders discussed bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest, underscoring the shared spiritual and cultural bonds that bring the people of the two Himalayan neighbours even closer.

Later, the Prime Minister joined His Majesty the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth King, and the Bhutanese Prime Minister at the Kalachakra initiation ceremony at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.

The ceremony was held as part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival and was presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan.

Officials described the meeting and Modi’s participation in the spiritual event as a reaffirmation of India’s deep cultural and people-to-people ties with Bhutan — a cornerstone of their enduring partnership.
