Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the 210-km Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on April 14. According to reports, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from over six hours to around 2.5 hours.

The six-lane expressway project, built at Rs 12,000-crore, has been hailed as a major boost for the infrastructure of Uttarakhand.

The route passes through key urban and semi-urban centres, including Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur, along with adjoining areas, and features multiple interchanges and service facilities designed to improve traffic movement and ease congestion on the longer routes.

The project also includes a wildlife-friendly elevated corridor. Last week, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), released a report, documenting the first evidence of wildlife using animal underpasses on the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor.

The study documented a total of 1,11,234 images of humans, domestic animals and wildlife. Among these, 40,444 were attributed to 18 unique wild species -- including various carnivores, herbivores, ungulates, pheasants, and primates -- utilising the underpass. The golden jackal was the most frequently captured wildlife, followed closely by nilgai, sambar and spotted deer. Notably, the study also recorded 60 instances of elephants safely utilising the corridors.
