Former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said on Saturday that the statements regarding China made in political context for consumption within India can be detrimental when it comes to opening dialogue with the neighbouring country for collaborations.
Khurshid was addressing the Delhi Forum for Strategic Studies (DFSS) on “India’s neighbourhood and evolving security paradigm”.
The former minister referred to recent slugfest among political parties regarding “who was willing to make deals with China”.
A delegation from the Chinese Communist Party was in India last week. They met representatives of political parties and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
Khurshid said there was a “problem of reciprocity” between India and its neighbours. On the recent protests in Bangladesh and Nepal, he said the leadership of those countries “failed” to understand the emergence of a new generation that don’t seem to communicate with legacy politicians.
The forum was headed by Lieutenant General Kamal Davar (retd) and included Bharat Karnad, Major General Ashok Mehta (retd), Ajai Sahni and Lt Gen RS Pannu (retd).
