Privilege notice against Rahul for China remark
A day after his mother Sonia Gandhi received a privilege notice over her remarks for President Droupadi Murmu, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi faced a similar notice in the Lower House on Tuesday.
BJP MP from Jharkhand’s Godda Nishikant Dubey submitted a breach of privilege notice against Rahul to Speaker Om Birla, calling his remarks during the Motion of Thanks debate “gibberish canards” that he failed to authenticate despite being asked by the Chair.
Dubey, in his letter, demanded that Rahul be reprimanded for alleged habitual falsifications on the floor of the House.
He accused Rahul of making false claims, including that mobile phones are only assembled, not manufactured, in India; that Chinese troops occupy Indian land (which Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has refuted); that India was not invited to former US President Donald Trump’s inauguration; and alleged malpractice in Maharashtra elections.
The BJP MP further claimed that Rahul had “shamelessly distorted facts” and attempted to “ridicule the country”. He argued that Rahul misunderstood Article 105 of the Constitution, which grants MPs freedom of speech in Parliament, saying it does not give him “unbridled” rights to make baseless accusations.
Dubey urged the Speaker to initiate urgent privilege proceedings against Rahul and called for him to be reprimanded in the current session of Parliament.
