Leader of Opposition in the Lok sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday hit out at the BJP leadership, accusing it of turning Assam into a ‘hub of corruption’ and vowing that a Congress government would bring sweeping change.

Addressing an election rally in Golaghat, Rahul alleged that the BJP government in the state was working for a select group of industrialists at the cost of ordinary citizens. “The public is being looted and the pockets of capitalists are being filled. This will no longer be tolerated,” he said, asserting that “change is coming to Assam” and that the Congress is set to return to power.

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Rahul claimed that Assam had been turned into an “ATM” for the BJP.

He alleged that land belonging to the people of the state was being taken “on one pretext or another” and handed over to industrialists like Gautam Adani, Mukesh Ambani and Baba Ramdev in exchange for financial benefits.

Rahul further alleged that the state government was being controlled from Delhi, claiming that the Chief Minister could not utter a word or act independently. “Assam is being run from Delhi. Whatever Modi and Shah say, Sarma follows,” he said, asserting that the Congress would hold those responsible for corruption accountable if voted to power.

The former Congress president also accused the Chief Minister of involving his family in alleged corrupt practices and warned of legal action. “No one will escape. Legal action will be taken,” he said, while asserting that the Congress would not “let them off the hook”.

Alongside his attacks, Rahul also sought to highlight Assam’s diversity, describing the state as a “bouquet of flowers” comprising people from different religions, castes and communities. He praised the contributions of various groups, including the Gorkha community, calling them an integral part of the state’s strength.

Criticising the BJP over unfulfilled promises, Rahul said commitments made in the previous election, such as granting ST status to six communities, reducing LPG cylinder prices, providing Rs 15 lakh in bank accounts and increasing wages for tea plantation workers, had not been honoured. “The BJP always lies, but the Congress never lies,” he said.

Among the key announcements, Rahul promised that justice would be delivered within 100 days in the case of the late singer Zubeen Garg, a commitment he said reflects the party’s focus on accountability and rule of law.
