Russian Deputy PM Manturov meets PM Modi, reviews strategic partnership
The 2 sides advance discussions under the framework of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation
India and Russia on Thursday signalled a renewed push to deepen their time-tested strategic partnership, with a flurry of high-level engagements spanning executive, economic and parliamentary domains, underscoring the resilience of bilateral ties amid a shifting global order.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov in New Delhi, as the two sides advanced discussions under the framework of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation.
The IGC meeting, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Manturov, focused on expanding collaboration across key sectors including trade, energy, technology and industrial partnerships -- areas that have remained central to India-Russia engagement despite geopolitical headwinds.
Parallel to the executive-level talks, parliamentary diplomacy gained fresh momentum as a high-level Russian delegation led by Vladimir Yakushev called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at Parliament House.
Welcoming the delegation, Birla emphasised that India-Russia parliamentary ties are poised to deepen through “renewed dialogue and cooperation”, highlighting the enduring nature of a partnership rooted in mutual trust and strategic convergence.
He pointed to sustained high-level political exchanges between Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a key driver of bilateral momentum, opening new avenues for cooperation in both traditional and emerging sectors.
Significantly, both countries underscored the importance of leveraging multilateral parliamentary platforms such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, BRICS parliamentary forum and the G20 to address global challenges through coordinated legislative diplomacy.
Yakushev described the India-Russia strategic partnership as “of utmost importance” to Moscow, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to expanding cooperation across trade, energy and technology sectors. He also extended an invitation to Birla to visit Russia and resume formal parliamentary exchanges.
