Rajya Sabha Chairman asks govt to echo Oppn’s sentiments to Home Minister
Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge today said that Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on police assault on student protesters recently was a non negotiable demand for the house to run smoothly.
Saying that the opposition would take a call on whether to support contentious legislative agenda including the FCRA amendments only after Shah has spoken in the house, Kharge said the HM is not heeding even Rajya Sabha chairman CP Radhakrishnan.
Radhakrishnan had this morning asked Parliamentary Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju to echo the sentiments of the opposition to the government.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh amplified Radhakrishnan’s message by posting the latter’s nudge to the government on X.
Asked if the Rajya Sabha would run smoothly since few days are left to the conclusion of monsoon session, Kharge said “Let Home minister come to the house, explain why tear gas shells were used on protesting students, why pellet guns were used and why lathi charge was ordered.”
Kharge said the opposition will take a call on running the house smoothly after Shah speaks and apologises. He also recalled late BJP leader Arun Jaitley’s statement that disruption was a legitimate parliamentary tool.
The Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha remained disrupted for most part, except when the Rajya Sabha passed the Appropriation Bill later in the day.
