'Unko toh Bharat Ratna dena chahiye': Assam CM Himanta on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar — who has become a major talking point in the West Bengal elections for his “audacious” handling of the controversial Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls — has just been recommended for India’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna. The suggestion has come from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Asked whether Gyanesh deserved a Padma for his SIR move, Himanta said, "Unko toh Bharat Ratna Dena chahiye... joh unhoney kiya hai... jitna samman diya jaye utna kam hain," Sarma said, predicting 200 out of 294 seats in BJP’s kitty in Bengal.
Himanta also said he would request the CEC to conduct the SIR in Assam also.
Countering Himanta, Congress leader Manish Tewari said, "Thank God, he (Himanta Biswa Sarma) didn't say that they will win elections on planet Saturn also. As far as the CEC is concerned, the reality is that there is no Election Commission. The Election Commission is a department of the BJP-NDA government."
