Vance dials PM Modi; discuss ways to deepen trade, defence ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice-President JD Vance on Saturday reviewed the progress of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, critical and emerging technologies, energy security and critical minerals.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Vance telephoned Modi and the two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Interestingly, the conversation came hours after the US Senate passed a sweeping Russia sanctions Bill that could expose India and China to tariffs of up to 100 per cent on their exports to the US for continuing to buy Russian oil and gas.

The development adds a fresh layer to the ongoing India-US economic engagement, with trade and tariffs already among the key issues in the bilateral relationship. The two leaders noted the sustained momentum in high-level engagements and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation across the identified areas.

Modi, in a post on X, said he had discussed with Vance ways to further deepen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The PM also congratulated Vance and his wife Usha Vance on the birth of their son and conveyed his best wishes to the entire family.
