Srinagar, July 17
Three militants of Jaish-e-Mohammad were killed and three soldiers were injured in a gunfight in Kulgam district on Friday, police said.
The gunfight erupted in Nagnad Chimmer when security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the area following an input about the presence of militants.
“The operation was launched around midnight. As the security forces approached the suspected area spot, the hiding militants fired at them at around 5.30 am, which was retaliated triggering an encounter. In the gunfight three militants were killed,” a police officer said. “Three soldiers were also wounded in the gunfight and they were shifted to a medical facility.”
One of the slain militants has been identified by police as Jaish-e-Mohamamd's IED expert Waleed bahi, a Pakistani national. Waleed was among the top wanted militants in Kashmir.
Security forces seized arms and ammunition from the encounter site.
Meanwhile, the combing operation along the Line of Control in Keran sector of Kupwara district entered its second day on Friday. The Army on Thursday claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid in Keran and killed a militant.
