Jammu, September 15

An army soldier lost his life, while two others, including a Major, were injured on Tuesday as Pakistani army violated ceasefire by using heavy fire and mortar shells along the Line of Control (LoC) in Sunderbani sector of Rajouri district.  

Jammu-based defence spokesperson said: “In the afternoon, Pakistan initiated the unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars. Some injuries have been reported”.  

The ceasefire violation was reported in Mala area, manned by 17 Madras Unit of 28 Infantry Brigade, of Sunderbani sector around 1.20 pm.

The spokesperson said the Army “retaliated befittingly”.

Official sources however, said that one of the injured solider—a rifleman—succumbed to his injuries while two others including Major were shifted to Army Hospital Akhnoor for further treatment.  

The central government had informed Parliament on Monday that there have been 3186 incidents of ceasefire violations along the Line of Control in the Jammu region this year till September 7.

In addition, 242 incidents of cross-border firing were also reported along the Indo-Pak International Border in the Jammu region from January 1 to August 31.

“There have been 8 fatalities and 2 injuries of Army personnel in J&K till September 7 and there have been 5 injuries of BSF personnel along the International Border and Line of Control in J&K,” the government had said.
