Srinagar, April 26

J&K on Monday recorded the highest single-day spike of 25 fatalities, taking the toll to 2,172, while 2,135 fresh cases pushed the tally to 1,62,868.

Out of the fresh cases, 791 were from the Jammu division and 1,344 from the Kashmir division of the UT, they said. Srinagar recorded the highest of 632 cases, followed by 472 in Jammu district and 139 in Kulgam district.

The active cases have now crossed the 20,000 mark.

Meanwhile, Hurriyat Conference-led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed concern over the health of Kashmiri political prisoners in jails across the country amidst the pandemic. He demanded their immediate release.

Quoting the family sources of Shahid-ul-Islam, who is Mirwaiz’s media adviser and currently in Tihar jail, the Hurriyat alleged he was ill and showed all Covid symptoms, but “authorities weren’t taking him to hospital”. — PTI
