Soon after the attack on two Army vehicles in Badnota village in Kathua, locals jumped to help the injured soldiers, who had suffered bullet and splinter wounds in the attack by militants. The injured soldiers were provided water and bandages by locals.

The incident took place at around 3.30 pm when some village shops and homes in the vicinity heard a loud explosion which was followed by firing. The locals helped the injured soldiers and also provided them with first aid.

The injured soldiers were also brought out of the vehicles by the locals. As per official records, Badnota village has a population of nearly 3,000.

Rajinder Kumar, a local shop owner, who had gone to the Billawar town and left his wife at the shop, said he was shocked to hear the news of the attack. “I called my wife who informed me that a gunfight was going on in the area and she had closed the shutter of the shop,” said Kumar.

Kumar said after the incident, locals brought their private vehicles in which the six injured soldiers were taken to a local hospital. An injured had later died, taking the total number of deceased to five while the same number of soldiers were injured.

Another local, who did not want to be identified, said after the attack, reinforcements reached the site and sound of firing was heard in the forest area nearby. He said that such incidents have never taken place in the area and it was a serious matter. Locals said the Army told them not to come out of their homes till the area was secured.
