A court in north Kashmir has rejected the bail pleas of eight police personnel, including a DSP, arrested by the CBI for alleged custodial torture of a constable at the Joint Interrogation Centre in Kupwara in February 2023.

Earlier this year, a Supreme Court Bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta had directed the CBI to register a case against police officials found responsible for the custodial torture.

The policemen who are in custody had recently filed bail applications in Kupwara court in north Kashmir.

“This Court is of the considered view that the applicants have not been able to make out any case for grant of bail at this stage. The plea of default bail is untenable in law in view of the presentation of the challan within the statutory period, and no substantial change in circumstances has occurred subsequent to the rejection of their earlier bail applications,” the order issued by Principal Sessions Judge, Kupwara, Manjeet Singh Manhas, has said.
