Civilian killed, soldier injured in encounter in Kashmir

A civilian was killed and a soldier injured today during a gunfight between the security forces and militants in south Kashmir.

The gunfight erupted after a joint team of the Army, police and the CRPF launched a counter-insurgency operation in the Redwani area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

The civilian was injured and later succumbed to his injuries, an official said.

He has been identified as Manzoor Lone of Redwani village. The injured soldier, Kiran Singh, has been hospitalised at the Army’s 92 Base hospital in Srinagar.

“Injured civilian Manzoor Lone, s/o Abdullah Lone, r/o Redwani Bala, Kulgam, succumbed to his injuries. Injured Army jawan Kiran Singh of 1RR, r/o Ramban, is hospitalised at 92 Base hospital, Srinagar. The search operation concluded,” the Kashmir Police tweeted.

The official said the militants might have escaped during the exchange of fire.
