Shiv Kumar Sharma, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, recently chaired a comprehensive meeting to address the growing concerns regarding gangsters and criminal activities in the region. The meeting, attended by Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), Additional Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Zonal Superintendents of Police, focused on strategies to curb criminal elements and enhance public safety.

During the session, the DIG emphasised the importance of concerted efforts to take decisive action against gangsters and anti-social elements operating in the area. He instructed law enforcement officers to maintain a comprehensive list of known criminals to ensure continuous surveillance over their activities. Sharma also directed that gangsters be booked under the Public Safety Act to prevent them from operating freely.

A key focus of the meeting was the disruption of the financial networks that support criminal activity. Sharma urged officials to seize properties amassed by gangsters through illegal activities such as extortion, land grabbing and illicit property dealings. He further stressed the need to monitor the support systems of these criminals, including their families and associates, and take legal action against them.

In addition, the DIG called for a crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications. Officers were instructed to conduct a massive drive to target vehicles with tinted windows, unauthorised modifications, loud music, or missing number plates, all of which could be used for criminal purposes. He also made it clear that strict legal action would be taken against individuals found in possession of illegal weapons or involved in land grabbing

The meeting also addressed security measures for the upcoming Republic Day celebrations. The DIG called for meticulous planning and enhanced security to counter any potential threats. Officers were directed to fortify security checkpoints especially in border areas and urban zones, during late-night and early morning hours.
