Erratic weather to disrupt normal life in J&K, Ladakh till April 10
Rain lashes the plains and fresh snowfall recorded in higher reaches of both Union Territories
Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are likely to witness erratic weather conditions until April 10, as rain lashed the plains and fresh snowfall was recorded in higher reaches of both Union Territories on Friday.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, intermittent rain and snowfall are expected at most places, accompanied by thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds. “There will be moderate to heavy rain and snow at a few locations,” the centre said.
The MeT department has also forecast another spell of rain and snow at several places between April 7 and 9.
Authorities have issued advisories warning of landslides in vulnerable areas and waterlogging in low-lying regions during this period of inclement weather. “There is a possibility of landslides at a few vulnerable locations and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Farmers are advised to suspend farm operations, while travellers should plan accordingly,” the advisory stated.
Thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph are also likely during this period.
Higher altitude regions and key mountain passes—including Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Top—are expected to receive fresh snowfall, which may disrupt traffic movement.
The weather is expected to improve slightly on April 5 and 6, with partly cloudy skies and chances of light rain at isolated places.
A brief spell of light precipitation may occur at isolated locations on April 10 and 11, while generally dry weather is expected between April 12 and 15.
The Meteorological Centre in Leh stated that rain and snow are likely over the Zojila-Drass axis, Sankoo-Rangdum axis, and higher peaks and passes of Leh district on April 4. “From April 5–6, conditions will remain partly cloudy and windy, while from April 7–8, there is a possibility of rain and snow along the Zojila-Drass axis with cloudy conditions elsewhere,” it said.
The centre also warned that rainfall and snowfall could trigger avalanches in vulnerable areas. “There is a moderate risk of closure of Zojila on April 4–5,” the advisory added.
