J&K CM Omar calls on PM Modi; presses for early restoration of statehood
Also congratulates the Prime Minister on completing 12 uninterrupted years in office
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed a range of issues concerning the Union Territory, including the restoration of statehood.
In a post on X, the Chief Minister’s Office said Abdullah met the Prime Minister and deliberated on key matters related to Jammu and Kashmir, including the early restoration of statehood, the state of the economy and the pace of development.
The statement said the Chief Minister also stressed the need for continued support from the Government of India to accelerate economic growth, strengthen connectivity, generate employment opportunities, expand infrastructure and enhance public welfare across Jammu and Kashmir.
Abdullah also congratulated the Prime Minister on completing 12 uninterrupted years in office.
Since the National Conference-led government assumed office in Jammu and Kashmir in 2024, Abdullah and other senior party leaders have repeatedly called for the restoration of statehood.
The Centre, however, has maintained that statehood will be restored at an “appropriate time”.
Apart from the statehood issue, the Union Territory administration is also awaiting the Centre’s approval on the transaction of business rules and the proposed rationalisation of the reservation policy.
The meeting comes amid continued efforts by the elected government to secure greater administrative and legislative powers for Jammu and Kashmir while pursuing its development agenda.
