Jammu Railway Division achieves operational milestones in first year
Freight operations expand significantly with transportation of over 20,000 tonnes of apples and 1.5 lakh tonnes of cement
The Jammu Division of Northern Railway has completed its first year of operations, recording significant revenue generation and expansion in freight and passenger connectivity, even as adverse weather conditions disrupted rail services during the year.
In 2025, the division secured Rs 94 crore through non-fare revenue contracts and recovered Rs 3.72 crore through ticket-checking drives. An official said that penalties were recovered from over 63,000 passengers during enforcement drives.
The division transported more than 20,000 tonnes of apples and 1.5 lakh tonnes of cement, benefiting local farmers and industries. The Anantnag goods shed, with a capacity to handle 1.5 lakh tonnes of cement, has played a key role in improving regional logistics.
For the first time, automobile and foodgrain rakes reached the Kashmir Valley, while cherry consignments were transported from Kashmir to Bandra, marking a major milestone in freight movement.
India’s 70th railway division, the Jammu Division was officially established and inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 6, 2025, providing rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country.
However, the rail network suffered significant damage during incessant rains and landslides in August and September last year, forcing the suspension of most train services for several days. While the majority of services were later restored, some trains are still not operational.
During 2025, the Jammu Division achieved several major milestones, including the inauguration of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), dedication of the iconic Chenab and Anji bridges to the nation, introduction of Vande Bharat trains, promotion of religious tourism, and an increase in freight movement of goods such as apples and cement.
The USBRL project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on June 6 last year, ensuring year-round rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express has carried over 3.75 lakh passengers since its launch, significantly reducing travel time. The Katra–Amritsar rail line has further strengthened spiritual connectivity for pilgrims.
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said that 2025 was a challenging year for the Jammu Division, but every effort was made to ensure passenger safety, convenience and comfort. “The Jammu Division is rapidly moving towards excellence, and this new chapter is bringing better connectivity and prosperity to the people of Kashmir. In 2026, the Jammu Division will write its second chapter with new projects,” he said.
