Jammu, July 25

The death toll breached 300-mark in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday after the Union Territory (UT) witnessed over 100 new deaths in just 10 days —the most rapid rise in fatalities since the outbreak of pandemic almost five months ago.

The death of a Covid-19 patient in Jammu and Kashmir was reported on March 26 and the figure touched 100 in 97 days on June 30. This number doubled in the next 15 days (on July 15) to reach 206 fatalities.

Pandemic curve steeper

The pandemic curve has become steeper since the UT administration announced lifting of the lockdown on June 8. In July, over 9,800 cases of the total 17,305 have been reported so far, while over 200 lost their battle against the virus. — Senior health official

The sudden rise in the Covid-19 deaths has rung alarm bells across the UT, with the medical professionals believing that the virus appears to have become more lethal. In the last 10 days, over 100 new deaths have been witnessed in Jammu and Kashmir, making the situation more alarming.

Of over 305 deaths in the UT so far, nearly 93 per cent fatalities (283) have been recorded in Kashmir valley, while 7 per cent patients died in the Jammu region where number of deaths is 22.

“The pandemic curve has become steeper since the UT administration announced lifting of the lockdown on June 8. In July, over 9,800 cases of the total 17,305 have been reported so far, while over 200 lost their battle against the virus,” a senior health official said.

He added, “The number of recoveries has almost doubled this month as nearly 4,900 patients have recovered this month”.

After witnessing a major surge in positive cases and Covid-19 deaths, the J&K administration has announced complete lockdown across the Kashmir valley except for Bandipora district till July 27.

In the Jammu region, the administration has announced weekend lockdown ranging from 55 hours to 60 hours to stem the spread of deadly virus.
