Ladakh L-G launches plantation of 2,100 cherry saplings in Phyang belt

Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Sunday emphasised the importance of extensive plantation efforts to protect the Union Territory’s fragile ecosystem.
Addressing environmental challenges, he highlighted that nature-based solutions are essential for securing the future of coming generations. The L-G inaugurated a mass plantation of 2,100 cherry saplings in Phyang, marking a significant step in introducing diverse plant species suited to Ladakh’s unique climate.
“The plantation drive is a milestone towards preserving Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and ensuring a sustainable future,” he said, urging the public to actively participate in environmental conservation.
As part of a new public participation initiative, every family in Ladakh will be encouraged to plant at least 10 saplings and nurture them. Families achieving the highest survival rate of planted trees will be recognised and awarded.
A spokesperson noted that since assuming office, L-G Saxena has spearheaded efforts to expand plantation drives across the region, aiming to enhance green cover, combat environmental degradation and promote sustainability.
