Mughal Road opened in winter for first time after snow clearance
Cleared by teams of Project Sampark from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali and Project Beacon from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali
In a first for the region, the snow clearance of the Mughal Road has been completed by Border Roads Organisation (BRO) before the end of winter, officials said on Friday.
An Army spokesperson said that National Highway 701A (Mughal Road) was cleared by teams of Project Sampark from Bufliaz to Peer Ki Gali and Project Beacon from Shopian to Peer Ki Gali.
During the reopening, Director General, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), VK Rajawat, along with officials from Project Sampark and Beacon, visited Peer Ki Gali. He appreciated the efforts of personnel involved in the snow clearance operations under harsh weather conditions.
Rajawat also reviewed the progress of widening work on NH-701A and said substantial progress had been made. He further assessed work on NH-144A and directed officials to expedite execution to ensure early completion.
While the Mughal Road has been declared traffic-worthy, officials cautioned that snow accumulation remains on adjoining slopes at certain vulnerable locations. Given prevailing weather conditions, the possibility of avalanches cannot be ruled out.
Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution and follow traffic advisories issued by the district administrations of Poonch and Shopian. Movement may be regulated depending on weather and safety assessments.
