Protests Protests demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu have once again brought to the fore the long-standing regional fault lines in Jammu and Kashmir.Law students, along with several social and political groups in Jammu, have intensified their demand for the premier legal institution to be set up in the region. However, voices from Kashmir have countered the demand, pointing out that Jammu already hosts institutions such as the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and other centres of national repute.What could have been a moment of collective pride for the Union Territory—being considered for a national-level institution—has instead spiralled into a debate marked by suspicion, regional rivalry and political posturing. Leaders and commentators from both regions have exchanged accusations, turning the issue into a controversy that is likely to deepen in the coming days.The dispute comes close on the heels of another flashpoint—the cancellation of the Letter of Permission granted to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME). Protests erupted in Jammu after a majority of seats at the institution, run by a Hindu shrine, were allotted to students from Kashmir. Following demonstrations, a National Medical Commission (NMC) team inspected the college and subsequently withdrew permission to run MBBS course.Protesters in Jammu argue that the region has long suffered neglect and discrimination under what they describe as Kashmir-centric governance. They claim that the demand for an NLU is not driven by rivalry but by the need for equitable and balanced development.In Jammu and Kashmir, such disputes often acquire a regional and, at times, communal dimension. The mistrust between Muslim-majority Kashmir and Hindu-majority Jammu has historically fuelled similar controversies, with the 2008 Amarnath land agitation standing out as a prominent example.While Jammu voices concerns over marginalisation, many in Kashmir argue that the location of an educational institution should be decided on parameters such as merit, accessibility, infrastructure, and long-term viability rather than regional sentiment.The debate has further snowballed due to claims and counter-claims on social media. Adding another layer to the discussion, residents of Rajouri, Poonch, Doda, and Kishtwar—regions marked by remoteness and developmental deficits—have also demanded that the university be set up in their areas.At its core, the controversy reflects deeper anxieties over representation, fairness, and policy-making in the Union Territory. Political parties, by amplifying regional narratives, have often sharpened the divide rather than fostering consensus.As polarisation grows, the larger objective—the establishment of a reputed institution that could curb educational migration and contribute to Jammu and Kashmir’s economy—risks being overshadowed by regional discord.
