Rail transport gives fresh boost to Kashmir cherry growers

NORTHERN Railway’s initiative to transport cherries by rail has come as a major boost for growers in Kashmir, with over 111 tonnes of the fruit shipped from Jammu and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to different parts of the country so far.

According to Northern Railway, more than 111 tonnes of cherries have been successfully transported through SLR and VP-based rail services, ensuring faster and safer delivery to key markets.

Chairman of the Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers-cum-Dealers’ Union, Bashir Ahmad Basheer, told The Tribune that rail transportation has significantly benefited cherry growers.

“Earlier, we had to transport cherries to Amritsar, from where they were sent to Mumbai by train. Mumbai is our primary market for the fruit,” he said.

Basheer said the availability of direct train services from Jammu to Mumbai has eased logistics and reduced transportation challenges.

He, however, stressed the need for direct rail connectivity between Srinagar and Mumbai, which would further cut transit time and help preserve the fruit’s freshness.

Railway officials said SLR and VP coaches are being used for transporting perishables such as cherries, ensuring safe and timely delivery.

“Booking, loading and cold-chain facilities are being provided at Jammu and Katra railway stations so that growers do not face any inconvenience,” the Railways said.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Jammu Division, Uchit Singhal, said the Railways would continue providing special facilities and expedited booking arrangements for horticultural produce.

“Farmers have placed their trust in the Railways to transport 111 tonnes of cherries. SLR and VP-based transportation is not only saving time but also helping increase farmers’ income,” he said.
