Renewed anti-drug drive in J&K tests strategy and resolve

THE recently launched campaign by the Lieutenant Governor-led administration of Jammu and Kashmir against the drug menace is expected to have a positive impact on a society struggling to keep its youth safe.As per multiple reports, drug addiction in the region, driven by proximity to Pakistan and porous borders, has been rising. Several cases of drug abuse in Jammu have led to the loss of young lives, but families often refrained from speaking out due to the stigma attached.However, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha recently directed the police and civil administration to eradicate the menace by targeting major smugglers, not just peddlers. What was once seen as a peripheral issue has now evolved into a serious social and public health challenge affecting families and communities.The renewed push, marked by a strategic shift, suggests that earlier efforts were insufficient. The new approach aims to disrupt supply chains and weaken organised networks operating across districts. A significant portion of drugs smuggled into J&K from Pakistan is further routed to Punjab and other states.The strategy also emphasises coordination among police, civil administration and intelligence agencies. The Army along the Line of Control (LoC) and the Border Security Force (BSF) along the International Border are expected to curb drug infiltration, often carried out using drones.Efforts are underway to strengthen de-addiction centres to ensure proper rehabilitation services. Authorities are also likely to act against centres found lacking in standards.Community participation forms a key pillar, with locals urged to report suspicious activities.Addressing an anti-drug rally in Kathua, the L-G called for a united fight against drug abuse.“I ignite a people’s revolution to eradicate drugs from every panchayat, every alley, every family in Kathua district. This is not a dream, but my unbreakable pledge,” he said.He added that the future would be shaped by decisions taken during this movement over the next three months.“We have crafted a 100-day roadmap with six phases. Month one focuses on awareness; month two on community outreach; and month three on sustainability. This campaign will sow seeds for lasting change. Its cornerstone is compassionate rehabilitation—we must treat addicts as patients who need care and support,” he said.
