In a significant step towards promoting inclusive growth and community empowerment, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has onboarded more than 10 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to supply essential religious materials used in ‘prasad’, including raksha sutra (sacred bracelets) and mouli (sacred threads).

The decision follows directions issued during the 76th Board meeting, chaired by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, where it was resolved to prioritise procurement from SHGs, women and young local entrepreneurs. The objective is to create a strong platform for local communities to actively participate in the economic ecosystem linked with pilgrimage activities, thereby promoting inclusive growth and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Each SHG comprises around 30 to 35 local women, and collectively these groups have engaged approximately 450 to 500 women across the region. By participating in income-generating activities, these women are contributing meaningfully to household incomes and improving the socio-economic well-being of their families and communities.

SMVDSB CEO Sachin Kumar Vaishya said that integrating SHGs into the supply chain will ensure a steady and sustainable source of income while promoting traditional skills and local craftsmanship.

He emphasised that the initiative empowers women, enabling financial independence and a stronger role in community development.

During the last financial year, the Board facilitated income opportunities worth approximately Rs 3.50 crore for these SHGs, significantly contributing to their economic upliftment. Building on this effort, the Board has decided to onboard more SHGs for sourcing offerings locally, expanding livelihood opportunities to nearly 1,500 women and strengthening grassroots enterprises through community-driven growth.
