Thakur Devi (70), a resident of Model House, reportedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at her house here this morning.

The deceased was alone at her house when she took the extreme step.

A labourer got to know about the fire emanating from her house and informed local residents. Around 10 am, the victim’s maid entered the house, and found her dead.

Station House Officer (SHO), Bhargo Camp, Barjinder Singh, said the victim was residing alone for the past 15 years. She was in depression following the death of her husband.

The SHO said: “As per the investigation, a relative of the victim from Dubai visited her last night. No other information has been received. We had recovered an empty can of kerosene from the house.”

He said the body of the victim had been sent for autopsy and would be handed over to the son of the victim, who was supposed to arrive this evening.
