Jalandhar, December 5

The brutal killing and gangrape of the 26-year-old veterinarian in Hyderabad has not only shaken the entire nation but have brought national shame, exposing the ugliest face of the country. The incident is a tragic reminder of the December 16, 2012, gangrape that took place in Delhi. While the number of cases are increasing with every passing year, the government has miserably failed to bring reforms in laws related to such incidents. In Jalandhar also, this year 75 cases of rape and 83 incidents related to eve- teasing and molestation were reported.

Since the past one week, tweets and posts on social media are going viral from across the nation. From celebrities to common people, none can forget the heart-wrenching incident of the veterinary doctor’s murder and rape. People through their WhatsApp status and posts showed outrage against the government and demanded death penalty for the suspects.

Talking to The Tribune, 23-year-old Pooja Yadav, a student of the MCA, said: “The incident is disgusting and disturbing. One can’t even imagine the pain the girl had to go through and now, her family is waiting for justice.

“Lack of a good system and strict laws are some of the reasons behind increase in such crimes incidents in the country. If a rapist is shot dead in public view or burnt alive, I think nobody in future would ever show guts to physically molest a women or rape her,” she said, adding that the Central Government should now wake up from its deep slumber and do justice to the victim’s family by offering capital punishment to the suspects.

Another girl Komalpreet Kaur said the present scenario for girls had become depressing. The incident had developed fear in the minds of parents who are now scared to allow their daughter to go out alone. It is high time that stringent measures be taken against suspects, be it juvenile or adult, in such cases. India could not enter the league of developed nations unless women were made to feel secure.

Bawa Jain, a 23-year-old city youth said the government had failed to instill fear among anti-social elements.

“Though rape has become a political issue in the country, politicians seeking votes on the issue still couldn’t provide stricter norms for the same. After the Hyderabad rape and murder incident we are shocked that most of the top political leaders in the country refrained from debating on the issue,” said Bawa.

Jaskaran Azad, another youth who also participated in a candle march to show his anger against the current scenario in the country, said: “No matter what our leaders were doing on the international front, the increasing rape and murder cases were contributing to tarnishing the image of our country. Instead of expecting anything from the judiciary, men and boys need to be sensitised against such incidents. Death penalty seems to be the only solution to curb such heinous crimes.
