Grandparents are fast becoming the forgotten generation, with youngsters now too busy to listen to their stories from the olden days, said Surinder Mahajan, a senior citizen and retired principal of a government school, who was a part of the celebrations of National Senior Citizen day organised by KMV College, in collaboration with Fly Udaan Zindagi Ki Trust, at the KMV campus on Wednesday.

He said the youngsters these days had no interest in spending time with their grandparents. He said according to recent researches that have been done on how many children or grandchildren visited their elder relatives to hear about their lives, the number of such children was very low.

Mahajan said in the past, children always looked after their parents while in this modern-era, they are too busy with their own lives. He said at times, many senior citizens felt they were burden on their families as nobody in their families had time for them.

Other senior citizens, too, shared same experiences and said it had become important for parents as well as schools and colleges to make students aware of the importance of elders in their lives and to give them the due respect.

Harsh Chopra said children would never realise how much happiness they gave their elders when they spent time with them or came to them with their queries or sought their suggestions before taking important decisions in their lives. She said she felt like ‘Google’ these days was more important to kids than their grandparents.

Talking to the Tribune, Pankaj Mehta, Chairman of Fly Udaan Zindagi Ki Trust, said the main purpose behind organising the event and celebrating the day with youngsters and grandparents was to motivate them to be positive in their lives and come out of their day-to-day stress and spend quality time with their parents as well as grandparents.

He said over 100 senior citizens were part of the event, which included retired officials from various background and grandparents of college students. He said a special ramp walk of all senior citizens was held to entertain the elders. Dr Sushma Chawala, a retired doctor and vice president of KMV managing committee, enthralled the audience with a dance performance.

Simerjeet Singh, a motivational speaker, inspired students with his talk and encouraged them to be at the service of elders.

The principal of KMV, Dr Atima Sharma Dwivedi, said senior citizens were the most valuable component of our society and in today’s world, the need for guidance and direction from the elders was required as one can get an umpteen amount of knowledge from their experiences. She further maintained that the young generation, especially the students, should respect and regard elders and should always be ready to serve them in any situation.
