The accused has been identified as Gurpreet Singh Ghag, a resident of Narang Shahpur locality, Phagwara.

Complainant Rakesh Bhanot, a resident of Hadiabad, Phagwara, told the police that he had financial dealings with Gurpreet Singh who fraudulently obtained the power of attorney for a property owned by Bhanot’s wife Kiran and transferred it in the name of his co-partner Surinder Singh, a resident of Sargundi, Phillaur, on October 28, 2011.

Gurpreet also took seven blank checks from Rakesh and his wife and deceitfully acquired Kiran’s signatures on blank documents.

He later created a sale agreement to transfer the property to himself and filed a petition in a court, falsely claiming that the property had been mortgaged with the bank.

Gurpreet then deposited two blank cheques through his brother-in-law, Rajapreet Singh Bajwa, leading to their dishonour.

Bhanot said Gurpreet and his accomplices Jeet Singh promised in the court to withdraw all cases in exchange for Rs 21 lakh. However, after receiving the money, they reneged on their promise.

Following this, an FIR was registered against Surinder Singh and Jeet Singh on the orders of the SDJM, Phagwara, Surekha Dadwal, but police investigations identified Gurpreet Singh Ghag as the main conspirator.

While Surinder Singh has fled abroad and Jeet Singh has passed away, the main accused Gurpreet Singh Ghag was arrested on Saturday after his bail was cancelled by the Sessions Court in Kapurthala. The police have secured a one-day remand for further investigation.
