The 9th and 10th All bread Dog Show was organised by Science City today. Around 15 dogs of 40 breeds; including Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, Golden, Retriever, Rottweiler, Boxer, Pomerralnial, Pug, St Bernard, Bulmastiff Caravan Hound, Rajapalyam Hound, Rampur Hound, Venjari Hound, Santal Hound, Indian Mastiff, Indian Pariah Dog, Himalayan Sheep Dog, Bully Kutta and Pointer, participated in the show. In the ring two, French Bulldogs, Welsh Korgi and Boxer bagged first, second and third prizes, respectively. In the ring one, Boxer, Labrador and German Shepherd won the first, second and third prize, respectively.
Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Tayyab was the chief guest.
He said dogs have earned distinction of being man’s best friends. With an incredible sense of smell, dogs could smell things 10 thousand times greater than human ever could.W ell-trained sniffer dogs were used in detection of explosives, illegal drug, theft and other crimes.
Dr Rajesh Grover, Director, Science City, said, domestic dogs were the most abundant terrestrial carnivore, with a global population close to a billion. All dogs were part of the same species, but their genes could dictate whether they were Chihuahua or a Great Dane.
“There can be a lot of variation in genes that make up the genetic diversity of dogs in terms of colours, sizes, and shapes. There is a need to bring awareness in society about faunal biodiversity with a focus on salient features of various breeds of dogs,” he said.
A special dog show was also organized by the Central Jail, Kapurthala, on the occasion.
