2,800 units of blood collected in 10 days

JALANDHAR: Amid a huge crowd of devotees visiting Sultanpur Lodhi and paying obeisance in various gurdwaras there, a blood donation camp organised by the Social Workers’ Association, Punjab, is also witnessing a large footfall.

Amid a huge crowd of devotees visiting Sultanpur Lodhi and paying obeisance in various gurdwaras there, a blood donation camp organised by the Social Workers’ Association, Punjab, is also witnessing a large footfall.

The camp started on November 2 and will conclude on November 13.

Representatives of the association said: “To mark the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, they have been organising the 12-day blood donation camp in which they were aiming to collect around 5,000 blood units.

Sukhchain Singh, one of the founders of the association, said they had been receiving excellent response from the devotees and as the camp has entered its 10th day, around 2,800 blood units had already been collected by them.

“Around 300-350 units are being collected every day at the camp. Hence, the camp would be continued as per schedule to achieve the target,” he said.

As many as 450 blood units were collected today till evening, while 345 units were collected on Sunday.

Other then local residents who are happily contributing to the cause, people, who have donated blood multiple times, are also inspiring people to do the noble act.

One such volunteer was Pammi, a resident of Nakodar, who donated blood for the 161st time.

Even police personnel, including men and women, who are deputed on a 12-hour duty in the holy town, were also donating blood. In return, the organising team is giving a framed photo of Gurdwara Ber Sahib and a certificate to the donors.

With a team of around eight members, the association is also joined by 25-30 volunteers, who are assisting them.

Sukhchain, who is working with the Punjab Police, said he, along with Gursaminder Singh, Davinder Bhuttar, Davinder Gora and Sukhdeep Deep, founded the association in 2011 and it was their 33rd blood donation camp. Besides, he said, the collected blood units would be deposited in government hospitals of the state.
