In the recently concluded trials for the Asian Games, two Punjab Police employees have been selected to represent India in the upcoming games.

Sub-inspectors in the district, Harpreet Singh Sandhu and Gurpreet Singh, have been selected in the 87 and 77 kg weight categories of the Greco-Roman style wrestling, respectively.

The games are scheduled to begin in Jakarta, Indonesia, from August 18.

Both athletes have received many national and international medals. Belonging to a wrestlers’ family, Harpreet (25), hails from Sangrur and has been playing the sport since 2004. After consistently winning bronze medals in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Asian Championships, he is also the first Indian wrestler to constantly win medals for three years in international games. Harpreet said he was also the winner of the 2016 and 2017 Commonwealth championships and was undefeated in the National Games for the past 10 years.

Similarly, Gurpreet (25) has many medals to his credit. The Mohali boy is five-time national champion in the 75 kg weight category of the Greco Roman style wrestling and had also participated in the 2014 Asian Games. He was also the gold medallist in the 2016 and 2017 Commonwealth Championships.
